Geoff W Completed! |
Fri 28 Mar 2008 10:22:29 PM |
I have officially been handed the keys for the micra today.
Jason spent this week finalising minor details - adjust the boost cut setting - adjust idle down from a crazy 1800rpm - install the new HKS Type 1 Turbo Timer, which includes features like 0-400m timing, lap timer, peak rpm recall, speed alarm, rpm with 2 stage shift light function, and of course turbo timer that monitors the rpm patterns and adjusts idle time accordingly. - searching for tiny vacuum leaks that could be causing a varying idle speed. - installed and wired up new oxygen sensor and connected autometer A/F ratio guage. After all this I am super impressed with every drive I have and slowly getting used to the whole new attitude of the car. It really is amazing how effortless yet smooth the car drives.... you don't feel the need to flog it because you really don't have to. All this fun on 7psi goes to show how amazing the turbo conversion can be when done right. I'll be getting a copy of the Dyno sheet soon which will be scanned and posted as soon as possible. I've gotta give it a great big clean up and take some proper photos and post em all in this topic, cause this is really a handy way to keep a record of your journey with your car.....of course barring a server crash etc.. |

So there you have it.... sorry bout the pics coming out a little blurry but that's a consequence of the resizing. At least by the method I used anyway.
I'm glad people think so highly of the car cause its been a very long journey since I bought the car about six years ago. Amazing how life changes in that time too... but if you keep your eye on the goal you can do it too. Of course there's still plenty left to do, like clutch, strenthen this and that etc... but most of the hard yards have been completed by Jason..... Thanks again!!! Can't really describe how it feels to drive the car now. It's something you've gotta experience.... But awesome comes close to the best way to describing it. Anyhow hope people enjoy the pics and thanks for all the comments :) |

tris WROTE: "any idea how much power you got out of it?? 0-100?? looks pretty sweet! how much did it cost you all up?" Umm cost..... hard to say yet, haven't had the balls to add it up yet but it's hefty. Performance.... been told 102Kw atw with 330 Nm maat WROTE: "wow.... Do you still have aircon?" Air con gone, was just too difficult to keep with the front mount cooler that I had. Tony WROTE: "I know your loving it but is there any thing your not 100% happy with or would like to change other than boosting it up more?" Well yeah there's always something but it always comes down to $$$$ It woulda been nice to get the gearbox and clutch done in one hit but the results so far are really really excellent. The plan with the gearbox is to get it "blueprinted" to ensure each gear meshes nicely and uses the full gear face to bear load. Air con woulda been a nice touch but at least there's a sun roof to ease the pain.. but sometimes that's the price to pay for fun factor. Ultimately it will get rods and forged pistons and be built to run about 15psi. But that's many savings down the track. At least the turbo is well suited to that. Other than that the car is awesome at the moment and has been described as the closest thing to a go kart on the road! |

Hey guys thought it was time for an update.
After about a month's driving the 'standard' clutch began to give way. This was expected to happen, however maybe not so soon. Jason teed up a custom modified one to be made by "First Choice Brake and Clutch" here in Newcastle. It's had the pressure plate modified and a suitable clutch plate to handle around the 300 hp mark. And let me tell you that after an expert job to uninstall, get the clutch made and re install the box, test and adjust. It's seriously amazing how much difference it makes! The little beast just boogies now. Both Jason and I suspect that the clutch has been slipping the whole time, including during tuning on the dyno. All seems to be fine as far as air/fuel etc as the computer gets all the info it needs from the miriad of sensors fitted. Also while the car was over at Jason's work, he did a favour or two for the exhaust shop guy at Phils Exhaust, Wallsend. Phil said that he'd return the favour any way he could so hey presto a new dump pipe back exhaust it is!! 2.5" press bent mild steel all the way through including a cat from a skyline. No restriction left there now. And the thing sounds awesome! With the previous exhaust (2" press bent N/A exhaust) when the car drove by accelerating you could hear a noise much like blowing hard through a straw! I can safely say that's a thing of the past! I'm much happier with the mounts on the exhaust too. The previous exhaust (fitted about 5 years ago) was only hung near the cat, and a mount on each side at the back of the muffler. With the high corner loading with my suspension, grippy tyres and spirited driving the pipe snapped out of the front of the muffler on no less than three occasions. So glad to be rid of another little thing that you've been meaning to fix for ages and just keep forgetting about. After the exhaust and clutch the car made boost a whole lot earlier and harder so much so that the blow off valve began leaking boost fairly badly. We also experienced a problem with the boost cut engaging at anything over about 25% throttle. We thought that maybe we should leave the leaking in an attempt to lessen the effect of the boost cut. However after trying tightening up the valve a little, we discovered that this was the problem all along!! Now boost cut only engages in the top end of 4th gear at very high loads. EXCELLENT :P We attribute this to the fact that the turbo is hardly working and is much better suited to an application of around the 15-20 psi range, so it wants to spool up to 15 but is restricted by the boost control of the 8860. As a result the spike of boost hits a little too quickly and the computer cuts the ignition to prevent over boosting. This can be quite violent but I attempt to avoid it at all costs. You don't need to use full throttle very much anyway! mostly you just let the power gently ramp up and amuse yourself with the fact that this is only a 1.3L engine doing these things so easily. I must say that it is awesome fun and I wish I could afford to drive the thing everywhere. I guess I'll just have to treat it like a little bit of a big boys toy. Again, again, again I must give great thanks to Jason for his efforts and wheeling and dealing, labour and overall great friendship for making all this possible. Thanks champ :) |

Not sure about your costs but i'm not finished yet and expect the whole thing to have cost me around 5-6g give or take a few hundred. Sounds like a real hoot to drive, any chance of a short video? I'm thinking of doing one as soon as possible. |

Hey guys.. sorry the posts have been a little sparse of late.
Guys this car is a pretty big budget affair... but at the same time has cost heaps less than it should have. Cause Jason gets trade price on everything.... but to put it in perspective.. the computer alone, hardware only and the hand controller cost about the 3 grand mark.. this was back when the top of the line EMS 8860 was brand spanking new. So yeah the cost would have dropped by now. Tony WROTE: "A turbo conversion is a big pain in the arse! But listen to how happy the guy is. By the way mate just curious what turbo are you running? Sounds like a real hoot to drive, any chance of a short video? I'm thinking of doing one as soon as possible." The turbo is one off a CA18DET but has been flowed and spun to be more high flow so at 7 psi its not even starting to think about working hard. As for video well gotta organise a time to get an hour up the road to Bulahdelah to the same corner as my previous video (see multimedia section) and then there'll be a nice opportunity for comparisons :P tris WROTE: "geoff.... been looking through the site... you used to have some sweet white 8spoke wheels in the pics of the newcastle meet... still got them?? or do you know what brand they were?? they look mad.. i want a set!" Tris.. mate these wheels were sold at Jasons Tyre shop about 2 days after I got the current Gold wheels on there. So didn't have time or the need to advertise on the site... The offset used to be a little out and I used to experience some scrubbing on the drivers side rear wheel arch. The new King KG-5 Lights are doing the trick nicely :) The conversion took the best part of 18 months with work being done in between job, house, and marital changes on both mine and Jason's behalf. Cost? To be honest I don't know. It was mostly done through a private arrangment between Jas and myself. I helped him out years ago and this was his payback.. AWESOME hey? Most things go in thousand dollar jumps these days but that's cause we wanted over engineered parts and the ability to just drop a Forged internal motor into the bay and bolt up the ancillaries, re-tune and go, hard! Another little snippet.. the Fuel Rail, injectors, throttle body set up cost $1200. Completely outsourced though. Still driving beautifully and still ecstatic every time I hit that right pedal. |

Hey guys I know I haven't said much lately but heres the update.
Jason recently organised the custom making of a radiator by PWR in QLD to give me that little bit of insurance against overheating the motor and blowing head gaskets etc. This is what ended up happening. We took the standard radiator and fan out about 4 weeks ago and couriered them up to PWR, so they could size the new one exactly as per the original radiator. 3 weeks later.... I have a 52mm core thickness with the same outer dimensions as the standard radiator and a SPAL 14" fan that flows up to 1750cfm to keep everything cool. ABSOLUTELY BLOODY BRILLIANT I tell you. This thing is a work of art. Took approximately 1hr to fit and went in without a hitch, bar the fact that the overflow outlet nipple was a little undersized. But this was nothing a tighter little hose clamp did not fix :) We cut the plug off the standard fan, which by the way is bulky as and takes up precious room in the engine bay. (See Pics and then look at the size of your fan) joined em up soldered and heat shrink and works like a charm. Even got the fan to run the correct direction first time! Now the car heats up and once the thing idles for about 5 min the fan cuts in, runs for about 45 sec and voila back to normal temp!! I was having withdrawals from not driving the car so I decided to give her a good run. Gave her a nice wash and took some pics down next to the local Williams River. I've been waiting for ages to get a good day to get some better pics so this was all the excuse I needed. So from now on you can most likely ask PWR for a radiator similar to this if that's the path you choose. I must say for ease of fitment alone it was well worth the money in my opinion. Enjoy fellas. |

The cam cover is polished. Easy to maintain.
I use some stuff made by California Gold called Purple. Get it at Autopro. It's a purple (guess you saw that coming) liquid thats great for all metal polished surfaces. Brings Chrome up unbelievably good. Bout 30 bucks for a bottle but it'll last you years. |

I finally got around to getting some polish and wax onto the Micra on the weekend.
Me and Jason spent Sat arvo/evening doing the Meguiars 3 Step on the Micra. 1) Paint Cleaner - removes oxides and old polish/wax to give a good surface to polish 2) Polish - takes the tiniest bit of paint off and takes out swirls from washing/chamoising etc. 3) Meguiars NXT Generation 2.0 Liquid wax ( Great stuff ) This has changed the colour of the car completely. All swirls/buff marks are gone and the pearl in the paint pops, whilst the paint appears to be "deep" again. I love it! It took about 3 hours all up between the two of us. We also just waxed Jason's BF XR8 ex-cop chaser on Sunday arvo. It came up beautifully too. Here's some more piccys. Enjoy. |

Looks very nice Geoff, makes me want to dig my micra out of the shed and get it going! Out of interest does the micra keep up with the xr8?

sportsclassic WROTE: "Out of interest does the micra keep up with the xr8?" Sportsclassic.... yeah it does to an extent. It is heaps nimbler through corners so I get the jump on him outta roundabouts etc and he has to play catch up. Pretty even match until about 130 then the big torque of the 5.4L kicks in and he pulls hard all the way to 220 limiter. But he said himself he had to work pretty hard to catch up. Pretty impressive I reckon. He is stoked cause he built this car for me. |

I was probably coming home to the Terrace from JB Hi-Fi. Bought myself some 3 doors down and the new Linkin Park album :) I like. Ah No... If it was a Saturday about 1:30pm I was on a parts run for Jason from Repco Hamilton to Wallsend twin servos. Was a bit of Fun. Anyhow beep your horn next time!! I'll wave or probaly stop for a quick chat. If I'm not in a hurry somewhere. I try not to be a snob! |

What power you putting down now?
My car was pretty average until 3rd gear..if I didn't have em in that then I gave up haha do you have a lightweight fly? |

Power is 110kw ATW on 9psi. Torque was around the 400Nm mark. But running 7 psi everyday. The real noticable difference is torque. Feels like a much bigger engine now.
And no haven't got a lightweight flywheel yet. It'll probably come with the Forged internals motor I have planned. That's the next goal on the horizon. |

No mate they're from that car (the Blue one in all the pics :) )
...I didn't get the dyno sheet printed out on that particular day, but I will be putting it over the dyno sometime soon to check all is okay after the new exhaust and running it on the street for a while. With the weather being a bit hotter now I'm getting intake temps of around the 30 degree Celsius mark. So that'll probably rob some power, along with heat soak on the dyno. |

Oh yeah and I forgot to post that I did some calcs the other day after a decent day driving.
Went around 350km. mixture of city driving (150km), highway miles (150km) and a good thrashing up the mountains in Bulahdelah..... 8.6 L/100km how's that!!!! I'm stoked. And that's running rich most of the time too, to protect the standard internals :) |

I would be very interested to see the printout, as 400Nm from a CG13 on 7psi of boost is not at all realistic, which will also sqew the power figures unfortunetely.
As a comparison we have a fully forged CGA3 running 14.5psi of boost and that currently makes 275Nm at the flywheel. |

Yes it is SSUK. Torque is multiplied via the final drive ratio which is why a dyno read torque figure is always higher and up on numbers compared to a flywheel or stock power figure.
Your 275Nm at the flywheel could be somthing like 275x4.11 for the wheel output, if you had 4.11:1 gearset |
