PROJECT DAILY SHITBOX |
Tue 19 Jul 2011 03:34:16 PM |
as if the existing collection of micras wasn't enough, i decided recently to get a replacement for the SLX i was thrashing about in as a daily... came across this 97 S2 LX that i thought would fit the bill.. only had 99,XXX k's on her, but had a hard working life (was apparently a farm vehicle in its former life): paint work and interior not the flashest and cv joints are full farked.. of course, wasn't content to leave it stock standard, so went about giving it some upgrades.. i was obviously fukn kidding myself when i pledged that i would spend bugger all for mods, and try and use some of the parts i had floating around - but u get that! lmao.. unlike the serious projects that are taken care of so masterfully by tmrs, i'm endeavouring to do the work (wherever practical) myself..
thus far, have done the following: replaced factory stereo with kenwood head deck, put in slx parcel tray and wired up rear speakers chucked in a recaro sr3 drivers seat on custom low rails installed mulholland extractors/2" mandrel bend exhaust/magnaflow stainless hi-flow cat/trust muffler HKS pod filter greddy oil catch can and aspect "Q magic pipe" mystery brand rear braces nismo front and rear swaybars/Nolathane bushes cusco panhard rod super s rear axle (thanks omegak11) whiteline lower control arm brace, droplinks and caster kit N15 1.6L brake calipers/RDA slotted rotors/TRW pads 14X6.5 +40 Watanabes with Kumho KU31 185/55 and rays duralight nuts Next things on the agenda will be chucking the RS5F31V box and shafts in with 4.3kg Jun F/W and exedy HD clutch, and installing the PS setup (thanks again to omegak11) Later ladies.... |

manual boost controller is only a temporary solution 'eh... once things get serious, the intention is to use a profec b.. boost is currently set @ 5psi which is fine for now - not gonna go nuts with the boost considering that this setup won't be dynoed until stage 2 happens with bigger turbo and adaptronic management

http://www.micra.com.au/community/message.php?messageid=61329 is the only NA project of mine Grev... i can say in all honesty that there is nothing quite like driving a forced k11 (hence why the daily shitbox project turned into a turbo conversion when the HKS kit came up) - especially a turbo conversion like this http://www.micra.com.au/community/message.php?messageid=54978 ! but i do have a soft spot for raw, high revving NA power.. admittedly a naturally aspirated setup like the current project is expensive, and won't put out the same sort of power figures as a forced micra without substantial cash outlay, but wanted to explore the option of a high compression/FCR setup.. that, and that not many micra owners actually go down the crazy NA path when considering major modifications - not suggesting that i'm the first or only person to do it, but is something different than going turbo

i'm not a huge fan of engine swaps.. not to say that it's a shit idea, because if it's done properly, then the results can be awesome - i think TMRS's is a prime example of that: http://www.micra.com.au/community/message.php?messageid=65300 - but i think the old cg13 is underrated and there is loads of potential if ur willing to put the resources into it... that's just my personal opinion - i'm sure there are plenty who'd disagree

glad u agree jc =)
just some info for anyone who tracks down this HKS kit and intends to bolt it straight on: the pipe from the throttle body to the turbo requires some slight modification - my guess is that the Z10 cube's t/b sits lower that the k11's, so u'll need to shave a bit off the t/b end of the pipe so that the bonnet will close properly; and secondly, forget the piece of shit "dump pipe" - i've got no idea what the evil geniuses @ HKS were thinking with that one... the only decent part of the pipe is the flange |

stage one turbo conversion done... is a brilliant setup - and the little turbo means it comes on boost nice and quick! boost is currently set @ 6psi - starts to lean out after 5500RPM, but that will be taken care of when the second part of the setup is done.. credit goes to steve and the boys @ katoomba brake & clutch (02 4782 2397) for taking care of the shitbox for me - anyone in the penrith/blue mountains area that is after someone to take care of mods/tuning, go and see steve.. you know he's a decent bloke coz he drives a cube.. lol... enjoy!

Pepper, still using factory ecu mate... fuel pressure regulator is a must though... also upgraded the fuel pump to a walbro 550bhp.. we used a wideband o2 sensor to get air/fuel ratios right.. seems that the stock injectors are the weak point of the setup - hence why the boost was changed from 7psi that it was initially set at to 6.. was leaning out pretty significantly... still need to be careful to not get the revs above 5500 too often though or things won't last too long!

Have you considered using GA16 injectors? I was thinking I could leave the fuel pump alone, upping the pressure with GA16s? The last Turbo
I bought running had Walbro pump, GA16 and upped pressure however was then running too rich. So I was gonna back off the fuel pump as from reading on the forums it was the same as the SR20 pump? How did you tune the car on a standard ECU? I was gonna use Nistune I think for more than 7psi but on my first setup I plan to only run 5psi. THanks for the info btw :) Pepper |

Pepper... ecu wasn't tuned mate - we basically just used fuel pressure regulation to get a decent air/fuel ratio... thus far, it has worked out nicely with the setup as it is... i certainly don't consider this hks kit to be "bolt-on", as i'd no way consider running it without a fuel pump upgrade and FPR.. just waiting on sr20 fuel rail mod to be done so that the second stage of the conversion can commence.. having said that, this turbo is a fun setup to run without taking it to the "next level", but u definitely want fuel pump/reg and GA15/16 injectors

Is your turbo being oil feed?
If so, what part of the engine are you having it feed from? I have read that people have been using a high pressure source from the left side of the head? any other mods of just wheels and turbo? |

It didnt come with MAP/MAF sensor. So you planning to run local sr20 maf sensor? Also leaving the cost of the engine aside could you tell me approx. how much did the shipping and tax form canada cost ya. Cheers |

I suspect that most of the notifications on here end up in spam folders as I haven't heard back from any private messages yet lol!

No worries here kovert, I take your approach these days and just bag my stuff directly from Japan. Even though the exchange rates suck it's still the best way ;)
As always, I will be watching progress, your builds are always top spec & quality! How's things progressing with the high rpm CG13 build? |

kovert.k11 WROTE: "Pepper, still using factory ecu mate... fuel pressure regulator is a must though... also upgraded the fuel pump to a walbro 550bhp.. we used a wideband o2 sensor to get air/fuel ratios right.. seems that the stock injectors are the weak point of the setup - hence why the boost was changed from 7psi that it was initially set at to 6.. was leaning out pretty significantly... still need to be careful to not get the revs above 5500 too often though or things won't last too long!" Thread recovery haha, so i see all you have done to reach 6psi is, FPR, Wide-band o2 sensor and an upgraded fuel pump? a thing i noticed that is different to your turbo compared to mine is i don't have a hose to i can run a boost t? |
