My new k11 lx |
Tue 15 Mar 2011 07:36:27 PM |
Hi All,
Ive been around for a while, and owned an slx for a couple of years doing some minor mods to it. Ive always wanted to get an lx (lighter and better for my needs then a super s), and last month I finally found one in Melbourne that looked like this... http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff368/climberjoel/IMG_1040.jpg http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff368/climberjoel/reardisks.jpg Mods list has been updated since original post and is currently roughly as follows. Installed so far: Super S rear disks (woot!!), Apexi Safc2 Whiteline F&R swaybars, panhard rod, droplinks, caster kit, camber kit Nismo Strut brace Two polly rear trailing arm bushings BC coilovers Super S interior Exedy HD clutch and JUN 3.6kg flywheel Redline MTL trans fluid CG10 dampened crank pulley - 700g lighter than the cg13 version ga15 TB Ohlins rear dampners Bride side mount seat rail and Sparco seat Braille b14115 lightweight battery, relocated under the passenger seat with a FIA cut off swich Super S front and rear bars (needs paint) Maxim works stainless 4-1 extractors and 2 inch stainless mandrel bent system Wheels: Enkei RPF1's 15x7 +35 with Toyo r1r 195/50 r15 'globes' 14x6 +20? with Kumho v700s Watanabe 14x6 with 185/55 r14 Parts ive binned: Rear seats and belts etc Sound system rear wiper and motor rear brake light the thick sound deadening under front seats front tow hooks and transport mounts Parts i have but still to put on: Aspect fiberglass front fenders pulsar n14 calipers and rda disks goodridge braided lines SUper S side rear windows (one in so far...) japanese cg13de - low km micra.com.au sticker! Hurricane 4-2-1 extractors, now superseded by the below! Parts i anticipate buying/installing in the coming weeks/months: ... After this stage I think i should be very content for a while! I enjoy competing at the local hillclimb, but I still want the micra to be fun on the roads. I'm not fussed with massive power, and will always keep it na. Ive still got the slx too, she has been a great car to me. Thanks to everyone on this forum for the knowledge and help provided. http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff368/climberjoel/caper.jpg Current PB's: SDMA Hillclimb - 50.77sec Wakefield Park - 1:18.39 MG Car Club Motorkhana - 2nd outright, 1st in class |

If you are replacing the bumpers what are you doing with the old ones? I need a new front for mine, too broke to get one though.

mycra WROTE: " can supply RDA/DBA, Exedy HD(Datrats or standard), Race stage 1 ... also have a Jap spec CG13de Head and Goodridge lines. pm me whenever man.." stage 1 comes in ceramic, organic and ceramic cusion button. basically step up from HD. better friction materials, stronger diaframe, triple drive straps and better piviot point mod. Had to be custom just like 190mm datrats HD. |

for now just straight! (slight toe out on front).
LF was at +5.2deg toe out and the panhard rod had the rear axelout 2cm to the right after all the suspension changes. now 0.3deg toe out both sides, and axel is straight. Apparently the supension guy couldnt get any neg camber out of the bc strut tops whithout fouling, so ill look into that, or put in my camber bolts. Id like to run around -2deg camber on the front. Got confirmation for my motorkhana entry tyrie, thanks, looking forward to it! |

can you get -2deg using the bolts? It doesnt surprise me that you cant get any out of the top, there isnt much room to move.
Does more than -2deg induce traction issues? Good news re. khana, you'll love it :D |

nismo stune setup don't allow camber adjustment and whiteline bolts dont go that far... how did you get -4.5 im just curious...

to be honest i have no idea how i got that much neg camber on the front, i dont know what camber bolts are in it, i set it in for a wheel alignment and told them i wanted as much neg camber as possible and it came out with -4 one side and -4.4 or something on the other...
|

Re: My new k11 lx |
Sat 19 Mar 2011 10:19:04 AM |
yeah according to whiteline the camber bolts are only good for -1.5 deg. Although you can run two on either side (one on top and one on bottom) for more - but then youve got all your suspension held up with undersized bolts which are known to slip occasionally....
thats where franks technique comes in handy. |

i was going -1.5.. wasnt happy looks cool but no traction in wet and easily under steers with coilovers... -1 now is much better even though recommend was 0.6

did some timed testing today, rolling in second gear, floor throttle start timing at 2000rpm stop timing at 6500rpm. Full tank with passenger, 8 runs, 4 in either direction.
Stock engine average: 7.42sec GA15de Throttle body, stock everything else, average: 6.99sec Pretty happy with that and the TB should keep on improving once i free up the rest of the intake system and exhaust. |

ndxxx ill make sure i keep measuring what i do and posting - the amount of help ive gotten from old posts in this forum makes me hope i can put something back. Also at the recent hillclimb i got a pb of 53.63 (making all the mods all the more satisfying!), although fellow forum member tyrie is keeping me honest with a 55.45 with nothing but 185/55 semi slicks! motorkhana on the 3rd should be sweet! |

Good stuff Joel :) Lora is bringing her k11 to wakefield on the 9th (I'll be in the 1600), you should come! (Unless you are entering hillclimb the next day, I'm not lol almost fell off my chair when I saw the price!) |

I dont have ac (happyly!).
I agree with the flat spot under low throttle mycra, and its definetly not ideal and ill try and adress it down the road. I might do some timing under part thottle later on (although ill need an even longer road!!). Also as tyrie said, alot of my driving is on the track (with full and part throttle) so im happy to sacrifice some low range if i can get more top end. Half a second is huge to me. Yeah no hillclimb in april for me tyrie, but thanks for the heads up for Wakie, ill have a think about it! Cheers |

Im not sure my times - ill just wait till the e-mail. I really struggled on the last two layouts. I didnt like that the second track was much the same all day - not that thats the problem, they were just so tight that there wasnt much fun. I enjoyed watching you in the datsun, was very entertaining! I'm looking forward to testing the r1r's at the hillclimb - gonna try keep up with your datto! :) (ive been looking at renaut clios too, that guy at the hillclimb has gotten into the 46's hasnt he?) |

Yeah Reece is doing rediculous times in his clio, but he's a freak driver and would do awesome times no matter what he was driving! I'm looking at the model before his one, the 182, preferable F1.
I'm not sure if I'll have the datsun at the hillclimb, kinda ruined my street tyres at the khana lol |

I bought them before I got this lx so I got black as it would work with most car colors - but I wonder if bronze or silver would have been better... otherwise very happy with them. blue bumpers are on for a bit of fun, but they are growing on me! will eventually get them sprayed white. |

Project update -
Replaced both front bearings, ordered Jun flywheel, got 185/55 r14 Kumho Ku31's on the globe copies to use as daily wheels and keeping the RPF1's and toyos for hillclimb etc. New years resolution is to compete at some interstate events - starting with Wollongong (Huntley) Hillclimb 19 Feb and then Marulan Time Trial on 25 Feb. Went for an great drive the other wk end to test the new tyres, Canberra to the Snowys and back (doing the alpine way loop from Jindabyne, Khancoban, Cabramurra). Road was sealed, but ducked off road into Vic for a photo: http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff368/climberjoel/CopyofIMGP9211crop2.jpg Got a long list of things to fix/update shortly, including paint! Have a Time trial at Marulan tomorrow which should be good fun. Also in the next weeks ill be busy as I have a a new waterpump, jun flywheel, clutch and braille battery sitting here which im hoping to install before next hillclimb on 11 March, and then trackday at wakefield with the porsche club on the 12th! |

Thanks guys! I think one of the laps in that video got me a 1:19.03, later on in the day I was able to neaten my lines and bag a 1:18.39, which when you compare to a fast time for an evo/911 turbo of 1:07, still needs some improvement!

It dried up pretty quick to be a fine day (ps your old ohlins are still going strong!) Thanks again Ty for all the media coverage :)" ah good to hear :) Wish I had found a full set (front and rear) when I bought them. Don't you have a set of BC's? |

Don't you have a set of BC's?" I do but as yet i haven't used the rear BC dampners - just the ohlins. rear springs and perches are all BC. At some point ill test the BC dampners , but so far im happy. The only trouble i have with the ohlins is that the adjustment knobs are a bit temperamental and not very precise |

If I remember correctly (could be thinking of a different set), you can remove the adjustment piece on those and there is a set of mixed lengths adjustment rods inside, could benefit from lubricating them? Or just removing them to make sure there is no crap in there jamming them up.

spent 4 nights after work last week working on this... installed JUN 3.6kg flywheel, exedy clutch and nismo engine mounts. I'm hoping the mounts will stop wheel hop in the motorkhana.
I received my cg10 crankshaft pulley last week. Doesn't have the dampner in it, saving approx 1 kg of rotating mass. I'm interested to see if the NVH increases notably. Also, thanks to MickB, I am now the proud owner of a Maxim Works Stainless 4-1 extractors and full system. Hopefully to be installed this week. Im hoping all the above should help lower my PB at the local hillclimb! |

Exhaust system is in! Great quality, and thanks again to Mick! Bonus that i hadn't though of is the huge weight saving of the stainless extractors vs the stock cast iron. Car feels great round the tighter stuff now.
I wish I was more diligent in weighing everything ive taken off, but with the battery relocation, 3.6kg flywheel, new exhaust, and removal of the stock tow hooks/tie downs, ive been able to take a lot of weight out from in front of the wheels where it counts! next even is hillcimb on the 29th, so im hoping to lower my PB by 1 second (50.5 is what I'm aiming for!). Still some work to do before then, namely resting the ride height at the front given all the weight lost cheers |

Another successful day racing - lowered my PB for the SDMA hillclimb to 50.77, almost a second faster that my previous PB.
Changes ive made since the last hilclimb, and largely the reason for the improvement, include relocated battery, JUN flywheel and new exhaust. Just goes to show the value of these tried and tested mods! ill post a pick or two later on. cheers |

frank - my thoughts exactly! I plan on ordering some 773 cams off Mat H soon. I'd like to go the cg10 piston route too, but at this stage I don't think I have the time, or the skills to do that.

Come on Joel, you have a spare motor to play with! They say the three C's to make power are Cam, Carbs, Compression. You will have the Cam(s) and you have the Carbs (bigger TB), all you need is the Compression!!

busy wk end coming up, SAU texi-khana on Saturday and Motorkhana on Sunday. Havent competed at the texi-khana before so it should be fun mixing it with the Skylines. Ty will give me a run for my money with his new Hankooks!
Next weekend will be running at a supersprint at wakefield - need to get in practice before the Classic Skylines event (with a potential k11 trophy if we can get more people in!?) should be fun. |

yeah the timing was a bit disappointing, the overall ranking times dont include penalties which is a bit silly, and my last run wasnt recorded... oh well was a fun day out.

Wide angle lens realy kills the sense of speed (especialy in your SAU run)! |

Mickb WROTE: Need double rear swaybar mate!" I think its just more skill that I need Mick! I can do it fine sometimes using left foot brake and handbrake, just need to get the consistency. what would really help for khanas would be an LSD, the nismo mounts have removed the previous wheel hop I was getting, but translated that into more wheelspin! |

well the road trip went well - 2400km all up. Highlights being Great Alpine road to the top of Mt Hotham, road up (and down) the summit of Mt Buller and of course the Great Ocean Road. Lowlight was definitely the Hume Fwy back to Canberra from Geelong - earpugs can only do so much...
http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff368/climberjoel/IMGP1132.jpg http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff368/climberjoel/IMGP1056.jpg http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff368/climberjoel/IMGP1373.jpg Next race event for me will be a supersprint at Eastern Creek Raceway on 21 July, so I'm getting the car ready now. I'm going against the grain slightly and upgrading the stock k11 brakes, rather than going the pulsar route - reason being, bigger breaks put me in a higher supersprint class and I haven't run out of brakes on the track yet. I will be running Brembo Max disks, QFM A1RM pads, Goodridge braided lines and Penrite Sin fluid, so ill see how it goes! Also considering making some brake ducts, but ill see how I go at the creek 1st. |

frank2 WROTE: "nice one joel :) you,re really getting the most from your steed ! you gonna fit 18v brakes ? (same dia, but vented eh)" thanks frank - I do try! what are 18v? I haven't heard of any disks that are the same size as stock k11 (234 mm) but vented - even the later cga k11s vented disks are slightly larger diameter according to my internet 'research', but please correct me if I'm wrong! |

here,s a quote from one of baguete,s post,s joel btw :)
"On my '97 SR im using GTi-R brakes (256mm) with 14" 6J ET+38 alloys, on my '99 LX with GTi-R brakes too they fit with stock 1.3 Si 14" alloys, 14" steelies wont fit unless 3mm spacers are used. On my SuperS/March im using N15 1.6 calipers and brackets (22 brackets), N15 pads (fits 1.4 and 1.6) and N14 240mm discs, you can use the N15 247mm discs but N14 discs are way cheaper and the pads goes all on the surface anyway, they fit 14" steelies but not 13" steelies, never tested with 13" alloys. The N15 brakes with 21 brackets use 232mm discs and fit 13" steelies. Hope it helps. (Y)" |

Thanks Frank, although I cant find any 232mm n15 disks - maybe UK/Europe had something else?
The 1.6 n15 disks measure 247mm by everything I can find such as on the below online catalog: http://www.dba.com.au/catalogue/online-catalogue/ Anyway - Ive ordered all the gear for the stock setup so ill see how it goes! |
