MIX 'N' MATCH TACHOS AND SPEEDOS! DO YOU THINK IT WOULD WORK? |
Wed 28 Sep 2005 02:20:40 AM |
Hi all, i was just wondering, because i come across the tacho clusters every now and then, i was just wondering if this would be possible. The tachos that i see now and then are from automatic k11's. the speedo has the gear lights accross the bottom. as shown in the first pic. if i were to remove the tacho and the fuel and water temp gauges and transplant them into a normal cluster, would it work?

Also do you think the digital km readout clusters will work too?

You would need to inspect the PCBs to make sure they are the same. I doubt they would be but worth trying to compare if you can.

They do look very different between the super s and normal cluster.
Im guessing if you tried to put the tacho into the original cluster it would not work. You could perhaps solder wires onto the PCB to try and get it working but its probably not worth it. Altho perhaps nissan have made the pcbs the same to cut costs but the design has been updated over time therefore looks different. Might be worth tracing some wires perhaps? |

Easy - the clusters which have the auto gear readout on them. Simply make a new guage front facia and remove the light bulbs for the gear readout.
I don't see why that wouldn't work... Assuming you replaced the stock gauge facia with a decent one made on proper plastic anyway... |

But how would you wire the auto cluster into a manual car? It looks totally different.

When there is a will, there is a way.
An auto electrician should be able to help that. |

i notice that in my skyline, fog lights for example, even if the car did not come with them, the fog lamps harness exists. hopefully its the same case with these clusters. like for example the super s cluster goes into the lx without any mods at all. the lx harness already has provision for it right?

Its definately worth a try.
I reckon you should be able to get the tacho working. Don't think the electronic one would work, maybe its from a model with an electronic gearbox speedo drive sensor - or maybe its a hybrid hack that still runs off the mechanical sensor, in which case, you would be ahead! I had a newer UK 2000 base model electronic cluster, and it definately doesn't work, it didn't accept a mechanical speedo drive cable. |

thanks cisco. hmm... did you also notice the position of the reset km stalk thingy? some are inside the circle, and some are out. which one should i be looking for?

If you have a speedo cable you could fit the speed sensor in it's place in teh gearbox, then wire back to the speedo.
The speedo face would unscrew from one of the non tacho binnacles & could be screwed onto the automatic speedo. |
