Fitting replacment antenna

Fri 26 Feb 2010 05:17:32 PM
I saw an old posting but was wondering what's current now. Had my new radio fitted but they tested the stock antenna and found it to be below par for continuity and reception.

They are trying to source an aftermarket one but I was wondering what anyone else has done to address this problem as both my Micras need better antenna.

No just improving the signal. There was a bit of an issue with some Micras where the antenna had poor earthing/continuity. One of my cars has been acceptable but when I fitted the new radio the installers tested the antenna and it just came up as acceptable, not good.

The other Micra has very poor radio reception, not sure if the radio or the antenna but I suspect the antenna.

One car cannot get AM at all and the other not very well.

I found something like this at a wrecker once and installed it in the L300 van I used to have. Surprisingly it did make a pretty good improvement.

Don't really need a booster.Just need a good performing antenna. Could just purchase another Nissan one but I expect they'd be expensive and maybe hard to get. Need to find a better performing one that will still fit in to the existing mounting hole on the body.

So I was hoping someone had performed the exercise before and could tell me what fitted as a replacement.

I've been meaning to replace mine, as it's broken & currently has a coat hanger jammed down the hole, which works fine but doesn't look great. I pulled another aerial out of a wrecked K11, that was hard enough. So hard that I haven't been motivated to swap it in. The cable & plastic tube that runs down the A pillar is all one piece with the aerial. Feeding it through will be a pain, need to remove lots of trim, and I'm not exactly sure where the rainwater will go from the bottom of the plastic tube.

I just replaced mine with the one I got off of dala the other week. It's not too hard. With a couple lenghts of string and tape it makes it easier and didn't have to remove the interior trim apart from when unpulgging it from the radio. Also cut the plug of the radio end off first when you remove it and also to feed the new one in. It takes all of 5 mins to re-solder it to the new cable. If I knew what I was doing the first time around I recon I could have done the whole thing in 15 mins.

I assume that something from a pulsar or something would fit if you can't find a replacement k11 one? Have no idea where the drainage tube goes though, I just made sure to push it down as far past the foam in the body as I could.

Still trying to source an aftermarket one. Checked on new prices a genuine Micra antenna will set you back $125. So about $80 more then a quality aftermarket one.
