09 MAJOR DESIGN PROJECT-CUSTOM F/G DASH |

Hey guys
well its HSC time and for design and tech I have to do a major project that will last 3 terms. I go to Scots school in Albury. I had originally decided on doing a sub enclosure but I got bored e hols and kind of already did it, so it was back to the drawing board, I was tossing between a body kit and a dash, I went for the dash cuz the body kit will take forever. So did up all the planning drawing designing etc and now it’s ready to be built. This thread will be going into my portfolio as evidence of evaluation (so you must all say nice f about me so I get extra marks lol), as a log book for me and the markers and to show you all what im doing. So all comments are greatly appreciated as it goes toward getting me more marks. I went and got 5 sqm matting, 50 mm catlyst, 4 ltr resin, 3x speco gauges(tacho, oil pressure and amp), mdf, safety equip, the list goes on so does the price, I have a $600 budget for this project half me and half my parents. Any way onto pics I chopped up the matting into squares, measured up brackets for switches, a/c controls, headunit and then started cutting out. thanks for reading and watch out for updates |

Nice work mate. My year 12 DT project was an mp3 player in my car... got nominated for that art express thingo!
mp3 in a car? so what?... well, back then (man i sound old now) Mp3's players didn't exist yet so it was a whole PC chopped down wired into the boot with a hand controller and it routed through the stereo anyways, seen your glass work so far and its pretty impressive especially for your age so all the best with it happy to help answering any questions you have but it looks like you have it under control! |

well only really got all the brackets cut out today, im finding it hard cuz i only get an hour for a period so it flys!!! but here is some pics my dust blower i was having trouble seeing the line cuz it was covered in dust so i got the compressor hooked up the hose, but it in the vice and help the handle in with tape, genius!!! |

sorry about the lack of replying ive been sick
but im good now so its on witht the project, went to benalla this morning and pulled a dash out of a wreck and various other bits, 2 garbage bags full lol the car is compleatly stripped with everything i thought mite be usefull taken. anywho played around with gauge placment and trimmed the dash to make way for the skelton. |

double check that you can actually see the far right hand gauge, steering wheel might be in the way????

there is a shit load of brasings there, that will support the material when i streach it over the give it the strength, and then the glass will be the main form of strength, i just learnt if from watching online forums and just giving it a go

This looks pretty impressive. I love the look of the sketch!
But I'm nervous for you, and this is probably an obvious thing, but have you checked the clearance between the centre console and the gear shift? It looks like the centre console is going to end up sitting pretty far back from the original position and encroach on the cabin space... |

hey well i got material streahed over the bttom half of the dash as i will be doing it in two parts to make it easier and to prevent warping

yeah fiberglass over the entire dash, i had to do it in 2 sections the top and the bottom which you see above because it would be easier this way and prevent warping. for the finish i wanted to wrap it but now im thinking a satin paint a tan colour,

got a it of work done over the weekend, streached material for my shape layed some glass and started work on mounting the dash cluster and the a/c controls and headunit.
took me hours to mount those gauges lol enjoy |

Awesome!" thanks mate, the documentation is the whole point of this thread see, i am going to put this into my folio i have to hand in at the end of the year along with the dash, as a form of evaluation, so in fact you are all doing the work for me hehe thanks guys well i got some more layers of glass done today, did i mention the last layers :), besides a few minor touchups, then its onto mounting brackets and sanding :) |

my switches i got and the led, both chrome mmmmmm i love chrome goodies, these are for the hazard light, rear demister and the downlights i have installed in the hatch. they will all have printed on them labels and the led will tell me when they are on!

got some more work done, i got the glovebox fittin half properly still have to fix up a gap at the top but it works!!

haha believe it or not i dont, ut i wish i did, :( nah i have exams so i cant get in and work on it cuz the school wont let us. the workshop is open on saturday so i will have some pics for you by then :) i miss the dash :( been like a week since ive worked on it!

hey
i went into school today to do some work, got few more layers over the entire dash,cut out the gauge holders, and tidied up some imperfections!! wasnt happy with the gauges so i redid them! cheers      |

well ive started sanding lol
first up im sanding all joints and making sure they fit properlly i.e glovebox and then sanding the body, only the fiberglass and just so its smooth enough to stop me getting splinters, cuz its in a show in april so i want it to be smooth. |

cut the bottom section off, cut both of my fingers with in 5mins of eachother, and cut the hole for the headuniit, also put it in the car,      |

hey guys
just a bit of an update well im back at school now so i can (legally) work on it now lol (stupid board of studies) nothing really to update, i scored a mag article out of this and its not even done lol, i have one now and one when its done just going to write a list of the switches so i dont lose it lol downlights speaker/footwell leds hazard lights demister fuel cap actuator boot actuator i think thats it any more you may think of let me know i want all lighting etc to be controlld from the dash so yeah also going to write a list of the work to be done cuz i cnat lose it here either, im shocking at losing things lost my wallet the other day had to replace everything!!!!!!!! finsh gauges wire up gauges dash cluster surrond dash cluster mounts a/c control mounting point extend wiring loom for a/c headunit mount a/c vents storage compartment cut out cut holes for switches wire up switches extend hazard light and demister looms steering column surrond lower sides centre console body filler and sanding tweeter pods-NEW ADDIDTION front demister headunit wiring loom underdash wiring block 2 a/c pipes re route a/c pipes connecting lines im sure there will be more added to the list as time goes on! work pics soon! cheers |

first class back on the today, buttt i forgot my catlyst so no fiberglassing, instead i made some adjustments
i cut out the lower section for the storage compartment, and the gauges screwed up on me, sooo i cut them out and cut some more PVC pipe for the new holders, then i thought, hey why not try them in a triangle, so i did, butt now i cant decide which i like better!!!! what do you guys reckon in a triangle or side by side and im also considering putting a 7" screen on the passenger side cus atm its preety plain and boring. first i gotta find one! god my 600 dollar budget has gone through the roof and up into space lol but meh i got one chance make it cool!!! cheers guys        |

got the gauges redone today, took me ages to get them angled right, but i got there, and im much happier with how they look!!! that was all i got done today besides fixing up a bracket.

after alot of mucking around i finally got the switch pannel done now all i have to do is to mount and blend it into the dash, i had to make a pannel cuz the surface wasnt flat to mount it straight on the dash cheers  straight as fuk  |

got a load of work done today!!! got the bracket to mount the air con controls cut out and fiberglassed to the dash, cut out a hole for the bracket, made the backing for the storage compartment and also fiberglass the switch pannel in! cheers and enjoy!       from the back    |

went into school today and got some work done, not as much as i wanted to but meh, i got the headunit sleeve in mounted and glassed and made up variousurrounds for it to. thats it told ya it wasnt much but its comming togther now. made a surround that goes on the inside so i have something better to glass the sleeve to the dash with and a surround for the outside to make it preety!! cheers         |

hey guys
went into school today and worked on it, on friday i put som expanda foam in to make the shape for the cluster visor, that was dry today so i shaped that up and fiberglassed over it also glassed on of the headunit surround in place as well. also glassed over any imperfections. when it comes time to trim it the way the demister is set up atm wont work, so ive cut the slots out and made up a plate out of mdf, this will have a metal plate with the slots cut out for the demister in it, but wont be put in until the dash is covered. cheers          |

well got the cluster visor mould pulled off today and trimmed it a bit, need to get the cluster in the before i can fully trim it and make mountin points for it. the foam came out in one bit :) that will be great for my display table for the markers, get me some extra marks :)

ok well got some work done today
the gauges were sitting to high when i test fitted it, so i had to bring them down, cut it out and while i was at it put some rings on to make them fit better. then glassed it in at the right angle. then i had to fix up the storage area, it was to wide, so i ran it through the belt saw to cut it in half run it through again to reduce the size and glassed it back togther in the bottom section. i also pulled off the trims i made cut them up and now awaiting another layer of glass, i run out :( cheers guys         |

well today i got the speakers rings cut out and put one layer of glass on the gauge pod, run out of resin :( had to fix up a few ipmerfections where the material had overlapped in the corners. also sanded down some of the dash where i had glassed ready for some filler

looking at the pics now i got more work than i thought today.
