Progress update |
Mon 07 Aug 2006 08:53:29 PM |
Well the car is now off the road & taking up residents in the workshop. The turbo is fitted. Its now into the final mock up stage, just finalising locations for everthing. Will start making the intercooler brackets tuesday or wednesday. Then its off to have the cooler pipes made.
Battery is under the passenger seat. Just need to finishes wiring. I will take the camera to work tommoro & gets pics (as long as the camera decides to work). Looks good, it nice to finally see it all coming together. |

Well things didn't quite go to plan today. Due to manifold design, the top mount is now a front mount & a small section has been removed from around the drivers h/light inner mounts. I took some picks of a rough mock up in the morning, it still has the intercooler on top, but you get the idea.

yer the little problem are getting the brain working (& the air hacksaw).
I'm doing the conversion myself from parts bought 2nd hand (except the manifold & dump). Most part were bought cheap from various forums, from various user that were updating or decided to go a different way & no longer wanted there parts (including some new unused stuff). All up the conversion will cost me around $3k on the road. That also includes relocating the battery, the billet bottle, which were free from a friend :), custom bonded qfm pads (front) & a couple of guages. Im aiming for around 90kw at the wheels on 8psi. Couldn't tell you what it would cost to pay someone to do this maybe around 5-6k. But if you want my advice, if you want a turbo micra, just buy aarons & save yourself alot of money. |

Just a quick little update. The top mount intercooler has been ditch in favour of a pwr front mount (couldn't help myself). Spent a couple of hours after work today fabricating the lower mounts. Just need to get some rubber insulators for the lower mounts (its going to be mounted like the radiator), then I will make the top mounts (hopefully monday night). Also got some nice pwr silicon hose bends & reducers, damn they look nice.

Hey looking pretty cool..
you considered putting a flange between your exhaust and dump pipe? that'd be a biatch to get off if you needed to do something later on..this is just going from my experience.. my dump pipe cracked from the rocking of engine/etc. even with a flexpipe underneath, ended up bracing the dump pipe to the engine bay to take the strain off... |

There is a flange just behind the front sway bar. I had it fitted when I had the exhaust done. The dump bolts on the same place the old extractors use to, so if I need to, I can just take the turbo off & bolt the extractors back on.
Im still haven't got around to making a brace for the manifold. Haven't thought about bracing the dump pipe, might have to look into that if it cracks, let hope it doen't (prays). |

The sandwich plate is great, Im taking the oil feed for the turbo & a mechanical oil psi gauge from it.
While I would love to leave the intercooler for all to see (looks so damn good in real life), I will be meshing over it. I would hate to have a rock damage it. Its getting so close to firing up, I cant wait :) |

In order to remove it, I will have to drill it out (And since its an oil gallery I would prefer the head off so no metal gets into the oil galleries). |

Thanks for the kind comments guys.
Benben the actuator is set to 8psi at the moment. Thats all I can run with my current fuel setup (5th injector & haltech). The engine is internally stock (still running original head gasket), its done about 180k's. Expecting around mid 80kw's at the wheels. Will see how it goes with this setup, if the craving for more power sets in, then I will drop the compression, fit aftermaket management & wind the boost back to 14 psi (It was oringally running this in a gti & making 140kw at the wheels), however this would proberly make the engine & g/box a handgrenade. A very fun handgrenade. But a handgrenade none the less. |

Looking good for sure. Yes around 7/8 psi on that set up you should be okay.Anything above this you will be living on the edge.Yes mid high 80s you should achieve.I would recommend you get it on a dyno as soon as so they can make sure air fuel ratio is okay across the range.Get some insulation wrap around the air intake post intercooler to throttle body. Will help to keep it cool and not pick up any engine heat.Paint it first in high temp paint then wrap.Every little bit helps.
Give you 6 months and then the urge to go the next step will be very powerful. The dark side has that affect. Overall its a nice set up.Well done. |

If you are looking for a great range of automotive paints for all applications go to www.ppc.au.com These paints are brushable and after applying brush marks just disappear and you would swear it was applied by spray can.Have the engine enamel all over Whitey and very impressed.Tough as.

All intake piping is getting hpc coated & wrapped. This goes for the manifold & dump pipe aswell. It will be sent away next week. I know what you mean about more power, I haven't even hit the key & Im already thinking about upgrading to full engine management & larger injectors (thanks to alittle inspiration from evade). Must stay focused & finish the job at hand.
Not much left now, just finish the wiring (including guages), tidy up a few things, reinstall the pipe work, then head to the dyno. I can see the home stretch & it feels good. Even if it has taken longer than it was supposed to, but I know it will be worth the wait. |

Just a little updated. The car fired to life briefly tonight (still waiting on the water hose t-pieces so I can feed water to the turbo). Sounds great.
Oil pressure is very high (80psi on start up, then pass 100psi at 2k. Have to see what it reads when its warm. Might be a bit of crap stuck in the pressure relief valve, will check it out tommoro or sat, when I pick up the t-pieces. Hopefully will get a drive on saturday, will do a little tuning with the a/f guage. Not as accurate as a dyno, but will make it safe enough to drive to the dyno for tuning. I can also check to make sure everthing is working. Not to much left now. Just need to get it approved (thats going to be fun, not!) |

Just got back from my first drive. I think Im going to need stickier tyres, as it lights the tyre in 3rd :) (Going to need that lsd). It feels a little laggy, but Im not going to give it full throttle until its tuned, so it hard to tell.
Just waiting for it to cool down so I can make a heat shield for the turbo so it doesn't melt the grill. Then I will put it all back together & take some pics. If you read this yom, call me so I can organise to get that dash from you, then I can finish off the interior. The dark side has taken hold of another. |

Car got dyno'd today. Still waiting on the mod plater, he cant do it till monsday now :(. Had to pull almost all the base timing out of the car to stop it pinging at the end of the rev range. So here is the dyno sheet.
This was done during the middle of the day, so the car was overheating (had to stop several times to let it cool down). Need a larger radiator. The car made 89kw at 7psi with a very flat tourque curve. Graham (dyno owner) said it was one of the best torque curves he has seen on a small turbo front wheel drive. |

Awesome !!I reckon it is about spot on as Hack pulls the same at 7psi but I am sure you will do a bit better due to front mounted intercooler.
Get in touch with Errol at Datrats for a larger radiator as the one he supplied me is a direct swap and like took all of 30 minutes from go to whoa to fit. Well done Snoopy what a great result.Top stuff.Love the turque curve. The dark side embraces you. |

Looks like the step to full engine management is going to have to come soon than thought. The haltech has developed a mind of its own. It played up on the dyno (i.e wouldnt turn on) which was traced to a bad connector. So after the dyno I hard wired the unit in.
Today driving back from a mates place the car leaned out (I have an a/f guage which has now just paid for itself). Checked the haltech, it wasn't working. Had a fiddle with the wiring & let the unit cool down & it started working agian. Im hoping its a broken wire at the base of the unit. Have to cut the wiring close to the unit & rewire it from scratch & see if that fixes it. The moral of the story is, buy an air/fuel guage it may just save your engine. |

Gee sorry to hear. Hacks Haltech been going strong for nearly 2 years and no worries at all. Cuts in when you hit around 4.5 psi boost as that is when she starts to run lean and from the dyno the air fuel ratio is perfect right up to 7 psi.

When the haltech is working it does a great job considering how basic it is. It keeps the a/f pretty close to spot on. Its interesting to note that yours cuts in at 4.5psi dave. Mine injectors are out of fuel at 3.5psi. Im going to spend today trouble shooting the wiring. Im hoping its just the loom from the unit has a broken wire somewhere. The unit is located out of sight in the glove box. The a/f guage can tell me very quickly if the haltech doesn't turn on. Thanks for the responses guys, will let you know what I find. |

Considering how many hands and how many times that haltec has been installed in different micras I would suggest that it is a loom problem rather than a hardware issue myself.
Goodluck with it mate |

Haltech is up & running agian. Broken wire in the loom. Also the injector plug had come away. Need to replace the injector plug as the locking clip has been broken at some stage of its life.

congrats,
thats about right power for the boost you are running..good stuff what turbo is it again? My turbo's too big..t2 would have been much better or a normal t25 i think |

eheh and a T28 is waaaaay too big ehehe
Nah there's no such thing as a turbo thats too big. Its all about what you're aiming to achieve from the car. |

The turbo is a mitsy tdo4l, that has been hiflowed (cant remember what impeller was used). It was on a gti swift running 14 psi making 140kw at the wheels.
Comes on boost at just over 2k. Makes full boost by just over 3k. Feels a little laggy (thats being fairly picky though). Shoves you back in the seat at 5k. Responds well to throttle input. If you want to drive slow & steady it does it nicely, if you want to drive around like a man possed it does that well too. Highly recommend these turbo's, very well engineered. |

haha
ah cool, mine doesnt hit full boost till about 3.5-4k which is where you get shoved into your seat..starts around about 2k as well..i'd be happy with it hitting full boost at 3k. you using bleedvalve/boost control or anything or just running it off the wastegate to inlet vacuum? when i put a simple GFB atomic bleed valve it made boost much faster...made a fair difference. have fun with it! |

Yer boost is stock. Im using the gfb atomic bleed valve aswell. Makes a huge difference to when it comes on. I was enjoying it until this morning when the manifold cracked on 3 cylinders, will ring our exhaust shop when they open. Looks like being off the road for another week :(

Looks like being off the road for another week :(" that because of the turbo pulling down on the manifold? get something to brace it..sounds like its sorta like my dump pipe cracking problem but its your manifold instead.. good ol turbo micras hey..haha" Its was cause by a few factors 1. manifold tubing too thin, so it gets brittle when it gets hot. Which was amplified by the heat wrap. 2. rear of the exhaust touched the body when cornering hard, which vibrated the manifold. 3. exhaust system was too stiff. it was acting like a 5th engine mount. add these 3 things together = broken manifold. I was flat stick in 4th going into a sweeping corner. which aloud these 3 factors to act together. I got the manifold repaired. I dont think it will last more than 6 months as the pipes have overheated. So I will use it to make the support brackets, redo the exhaust & iron out the bugs. Then early next year I will get the exhaust shop to make me a new manifold out of thicker tubing (at a reduced price) & get it hpc coated . |

Definitely put a brace under the new manifold mate. I had one made up on blue monster - well worth it. There isn't a lot of room in there for a super beefy manifold, unless you make some nugget log style thing that doesn't flow very well..
Ah ha - welcome to turbo micras and super-custom noone-has-done-this-before fabrication frustration. |

Finished making the brace for the manifold.I had an old holden engine to g/box brace lying around. So with a little cutting, bending & welding, it now makes a very sturdy manifold brace.
I guess im very lucky that I can fabricate these sort of parts myself. I would hate to think what it would cost me to pay someone to make all the little custom things that I have made myself. Defeninatle couldn't have done this with out an oxy set. So handy for bending brackets & making all the little custom parts that just make it all fit together. |
